Urodynamics

Urodynamics involves a series of bladder tests to objectively assess your overall bladder function such as the ability to store and pass urine and also determining the type of urinary incontinence.

A cystoscopy will be performed concurrently to rule out bladder or urethral pathology.

When is urodynamics indicated?

The test is usually reserved for patients with conditions listed as below:

  • Failed conservative or medical therapy for urinary incontinence

    • Stress incontinence failed to improve with pelvic floor muscle training (PMFT)

    • Overactive bladder symptoms or urge urinary incontinence failed to respond to PMFT, bladder retraining or oral medications

  • Complex bladder symptoms when incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse surgery is contemplated

  • Suspicion of a voiding disorder

  • Previous unsuccessful incontinence surgery

  • Neurological related bladder disorders

How should I prepare for the appointment?

  • Bladder Fullness: Please arrive with a comfortably full bladder so we can begin with a natural voiding test.

  • Diet: You may eat and drink normally, no fasting is required.

  • Medications: Continue all regular medications unless specifically advised by Dr. Yong to stop overactive bladder medications (e.g. Oxybutynin, Solifenacin, Darifenacin, Mirabegron) 5 days prior.

  • Infection: If you suspect a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), please contact us to reschedule, as the test cannot be performed during an active infection.

Is the procedure painful?

The test is generally not painful, though some patients feel mild discomfort or "stinging" during the insertion of the fine catheters. We use a local anesthetic lubricant to minimize any sensation. Most patients find the experience much easier than they anticipated.

How long does the test take?

The procedure itself typically takes approximately 30 minutes. However, we recommend allowing up to 2 hours for your total appointment time to include the pre-test preparation and the post-test discussion of results with Dr. Yong.

What should I expect after the test?

You can resume all normal activities immediately, including driving. You may experience a slight stinging sensation when passing urine for the first 24 hours. We recommend increasing your fluid intake for the rest of the day to help flush the bladder and reduce the risk of a post-procedure UTI. You will be given ural sachets to alleviate the stinging sensation.

If UTI is suspected, please see your GP for urine test and treatment as indicated.
